Landmark Xenophon $99 or free*
In January 2010, we'll run our first Reading Odyssey reading group on the newly released Landmark Xenophone for those who would like the intensive peer-based reading experience of this great history.
Moderated by longtime Reading Odyssey moderator Andre Stipanovic, the reading group will meet Mondays Jan 11, Feb 22, Mar 22, May 10, June 7, July 12 at 8pm EST, 5pm Pacific via phone. Phone number will be supplied to all who register for the course.
Andre will use the custom Reading Odyssey method to make it a good experience and help first-time readers engage the text.
Reading Odyssey process?
The process is simple:
- readers will read about a chapter of the Landmark Xenophone each month assigned by Andre with reading questions
- then each month the readers will get on the phone to discuss that chapter (and the reading questions assigned by Andre)
- each phone call is recorded and the .mp3 is made available to the readers who missed it
- Andre is also available via e-mail during the month to answer questions - and members are encouraged to use the group e-mail listserv and blog to discuss the reading
Edition?
We'll be using Robert Strassler's Landmark Edition. It's available at Amazon or can be borrowed through your local library using the Reading Odyssey website directory of U.S. libraries - http://borrowabook.org.
Special guest?
Editor Robert Strassler will join one of the phone calls to spend time with the readers answering questions and discussing the reading.
* First-time readers for free?
First-time readers with the Reading Odyssey have the opportunity to participate at no charge in the intensive reading groups. They are, however, expected to participate in the whole reading and be active on the phone calls.
Veterans pay because they want to help cover administrative costs. The Reading Odyssey is an informal organization that will eventually be turned into a formal nonprofit but does not yet have that status.
Reading Odyssey is a nonprofit dedicated to helping adults reengage their intellectual curiosity through reading and discussing some of the best books and ideas.
The Reading Odyssey is sponsored by Citrix Online, their teleconferencing division, HiDefConferencing, and Constant Contact.
Reading Odyssey is always looking for additional help from sponsors or volunteers.
Our advisors include Paul Cartledge at Cambridge University and New York University, John Dowling at Harvard University, John Marincola at Florida State University, Barry Schwartz at Swarthmore College and Robert Strassler, an independent scholar.
